BSWC One-a-Day: Mixro - Black is the Night

Instant Classic.

An Editor's Pick at ccMixter, but with some controversy. I jammed on it immediately. No question about whether it is a one a day pick or not.

Another incredibly beautiful day here in New England and frankly those three sentences are all I can muster. Take care.

BSWC One-a-Day: The Fuzz - God Bless the Radio

A classic.

From the very first release of Chenard Walcker's netlabel, Free Sample Zone comes this incredible slice of the era. The tune was originally released in 1994 and rereleased on FSZ ten years later in 2004.

The Fuzz explained in the original notes why they refused to pay royalties for using samples. They encouraged artists to follow their policy. They had no success, neither with the music nor with the Free Sample movement. They released their following albums under the name of The O.

I'll be on the air later tonight. BSWC-The Show will be featuring tribute material from the WM Recordings Chenard Walcker tribute release....look for some classic Walcker stuff to go along with the feature release.

BSWC One-a-Day: Implosion Quintet - The way to the people is through *bing*

I am pleased to post the first track of the first release from Commodity records! The release, Shackle Your Rams, is quite eclectic, and tasty. I came across it on archive.org

From the Implosion Quintet Site:
"Deliberately under-produced, unquantized and sketchy, these are sincere creations of real people. We do of course have aspirations in joining the long, long line of glossy corporate puppets and becoming pouting cut-outs locked into vacuous mainstream mediocrity, but, dash it all, we just cant seem to get used to the taste of sperm."
Commodity Records is will be the central point for the release of Implosion Quintet's ongoing work, and other music that they like ;) . They admit freely on the site that there is no guiding philosophy for the label.

I hope you enjoy this track:

BSWC One-a-Day: Bayern Boom Beat - Cottonstorm

Sometimes a tune just takes me for a ride and I can't explain it. Well, perhaps that's true most of the time.

This early September release is V/a - From The Eastwood [kk013] on Krill Konzern.

This works for me. Thanks to Netlabelism.net for the heads up. I would love to know more about these artists, but couldn't find a thing. Help, anyone?

BSWC One-a-Day: Tripledoubler - My Galactic Turn [TDrmx]

Returning to ccMixter for a spell.

Here is a tune that uses the Beastie Boys CC licensed material from their website.

Tripledoubler put together a Run DMC-inspired track that moves.

BSWC One-a-Day: Chenard & Chicky - Street

Staying with the Chenard Walcker theme...he has done some wonderful work with Israeli poet, Roy "chicky" Arad. I really like today's selection for it's power and message. It was recorded the month before Chenard fell ill.

The Street (Haifa-Beirut 2006) is a poem that Chicky wrote against the war in Lebanon. He bought a new 3 Euro microphone and tried to record it louder. He sent the recording to Chenard Walcker, who added music.

Whether with his own productions or in company with other artists, Chenard Walcker has made a amazing impact on the "scene".

BSWC One-a-Day: Otis Fodder - Nous aimons oui

The first volume of the Chenard Walcker tribute release is up at WM Recordings. A impressive beginning, I must say.

Chenard Walcker is the plunderphonic wunderkind responsible for all sorts of audio madness. Unfortunately, he was stricken and is now recovering.

Chenard Walcker, a friend of the online music world, is slowly recovering from a diabetic coma. His brother reports that he is not physically suffering. He fell into the coma in September 2006, and is now working on speech development and object differentiation.

We all are hoping for a full recovery. Chenard's presence is missed.

BSWC One-a-Day: Realaze - Opium Noir (Another World Mix)

Jumped last night's show off with this brilliant mix. Oh yeah. I think I picked up from jamendo.com, but today's selection links directly to therealazeclub.fr.

From the artist:

BSWC One-a-Day: Hengky Strawberry - Dancethedresdendancefloor

Right now, I'm listening to a compilation of Indonesian netartists. It's from the netlabel, YesNo.

There are a number of standout tunes on the release that is called Music Beyond No Borders [yesno001]. This one jumped out at me, but the range is tremendous on this release (be sure to check out the punkish tune at the end by the band, Punkasila. Jaeger Boy is pretty cool, too).

BSWC One-a-Day: Tristan Linton - Black Russian

via Netwaves #036 (if you are not listening to this most excellent radio program, follow the link).

Tristan Linton is wonderful. I'm really enjoying the classic instrumentation.

Black Russian has a soundtrack feel. Could be the soundtrack to my life. It is on the Konkord netlabel and is called SoulThieves [konkord020].

BSWC One-a-Day: Adrien Juarez - tua nema nishto

It was Monday when I stumbled on the release las guerras from Adrian Juarez (released on Ruidismo). I began listening and couldn't stop until I'd finished the release. Then I listened again, and then to my favorite tracks. The music is fresh, extremely varied, and not self conscious at all. I'm really impressed, and different aspects of the release continue to grow on me.

I chose Tua Nema Nishto, a hip-hop track, because it is an easy one to like right away. If you like it, then try tracks 4 and 5. Once you're convinced that you need to have this daring album in your collection, visit the archive.org page and download the full directory.

You'll remember there was another Adrian Juarez track featured in June on BSWC. Oh, and I love the cover photo, taken by Hanna Dryland (more of her work here).

BSWC One-a-Day: Fattoria del vento - Immaturismo

This is the latest release from a netlabel that I enjoy, Muertepop. The release is called Fattoria del vento [muerte007].

I'll let the notes describe the action:
"Fattoria del vento" is a creative musical project, nine special tracks, sound, image, place, the renovation to artistic use of a nearly falling apart country house in north-east Italy. The sonorous poetics is based on the union of electronic rhythmics obtained from the combination of noises produced from objects and situations of the common life and minimal acoustic tunes.

BSWC One-a-Day: Pool Reverse - Jazz

Jazz it is not, but man I'm digging the dance floor groove.

Boy, I have nothing about this release that just appeared on archive.org. It is called Binary EP [rith005].

Boy, I like it.

BSWC One-a-Day: Carlos Suarez - Necrolinguaxe

It was a grey day this past Friday when I discovered Resonancias Ontolóxicas, a perfectly fitting release. I listened all the way through and then again. Sent a link to a friend, and tried to think about which song to post. The entire release seems to be filled with the sounds of the natural world - frogs, rain, leaves hit by wind, the noise of a gurgling volcano. The tones and sounds will definitely stimulate your neurons.
"The sound plays inside the vault of the thought, and its innumerable thinkings invoke the presence of to be, reverberating inside an acoustic architecture and producing arguments that debilitates the disintegration power of death."
Necrolinguax puts a cinematic image in my head. There is a decision to be made, and really a course of action that must be taken, the protagonist has woken to the dark realization of this and stands looking over a vastly remote view. The rythym is the beat of preparation and a driving force that cannot be stopped.

Alg-label is a netlabel in Galicia, Spain. It is a label published by the digital arts community alg-a - a community of art, culture, and free action. Carlos Suarez works as an ethnomusicologist (if my poor translation is accurate) - his music certainly reflects this knowledge.

enjoy this selection

BSWC One-a-Day: Trifonic - Bored on Your Backside

I'm at home listening to BSWC on the mothership, WBCR-LP. I loaded a show from 9.17.05. This program was the second BSWC devoted to open-source music. Great playlist, if I say so myself.

Here is something that stood out in the show. The tune is from ccMixter.org. This tune stands out across the broad sweep of that amazing remix site.

2 years of CC music on BSWC is an amazing thing...love keeping it on. Gotta go, Eloi Brunelle just came up in the playlist....

BSWC One-a-Day: Emily in Love - I Can't Imagine

Today's selection comes to us via the playlist from the latest Netwaves radio program.

Emily in Love released this collection, You Break my Heart, You Bought it [corpidex021]. Emily in Love is a side project of Emily, "one half of the electropop duo Bisexual Cyborg, a sad Australian girl who makes dreamy indiepop/folk/tronica for herself and her imaginary cats."

If you like this then you should definitely cruise Corpid and look at the rest of their offerings. They run a very nice little netlabel.

BSWC One-a-Day: Radioguagua Soundsystem - Corazon Comprado

This was released back in the middle of August. Yo, how did I miss it. Got to keep my ear to the ground.

The notes say that Radioguagua Soundsystem is from Venezuela and "they produce a sound that they call Salso or a mix from Salsa/Big Beat/Hip Hop and Jungle." The release is called Yo Vine Pa Ver [pcr034]

Works for me. Also, Sascha Muller is involved.

BSWC One-a-Day: Tiny Creatures - The Bing Bang

There is no doubt that some of the most interesting, moving, and dynamic music being created today is coming to us from through the Internet - not fed to us by record companies, but by the artists themselves and through small netlabels employing Creative Commons licensing. Sifting through the massive amount of work being published every day and then choosing just one track certainly gives me a sense of this.

We do have our favorites, and one of mine is the netlabel birdsong, which specializes in creative home recordings. Favoring lo-fi and hi-quality to hi-fi and low-quality Birdsong has delivered some excellent and unique contributions to the CC sphere.

The Bing Bang is one of several excellent tracks from the release Homunculus (I love Lost Wax, She was a Leopard, and Satomi Matsuzaki to mention a few). The track is rich with cross genre influence: Drone, noise, ritual drumming, boys choir, folk... The drums move you and the vocals have an excellent atmospheric presence.
"From beatbox layers recorded live into a delay pedal to stinging guitars to a harmonium competing with crappy, lo-fi keyboards and vocals that conjure images of the Red Army choir, "Homunculus" rides the fine line between eclectic and cohesive and falls square in the middle."
I hope you enjoy as much as I do.

BSWC One-a-Day: Spirit Elevating Brains - Joy is Not in the Brain

Quiet and funky is the word for today. I found this via our friends at netlabelism.net.

Spirit Elevating Brains is Sebastian Alvarez, a Peruvian born artist who has spent time in Brazil, New York and is now based in Chicago pursuing a degree in Performance Arts.

There is a lot of stuff going on in this release called, Raw adventures of the strident, harsh and sweet returnee [tube084]. It was released by the netlabel, Test Tube on July 25. The notes have more to say:
"Spirit elevating brains makes music that hijacks into memory, digital nostalgia, pins and needles for the cerebrum. Microscopic sounds come together like intricate metal sculptures, surgeons’ tools, watchmakers’ gadgets, all joining together in unlikely organic assemblages that leap and flap around the room."
Go get it.

BSWC One-a-Day: D.Soul - Morning Caffeine

Admitedly I expected something slightly different from a track titled morning caffeine but after listening to it a few times, I started to feel like maybe it was perfect. After all, that first cup of coffee relaxes, inspires, and finally charges you up. Another well put together release from the Japanese Netlabel Bump Foot, D. Soul's Silk EP delivers a deep and minimal sound. Clean, but not sterile - the little glitches help with that.

D. Soul, aka Daniel Tischer, is a German based artist/dj/producer who founded the netlabel tropic. He has release tow other EPs on Bumpfoot, Mad Morning EP and Ocean EP - both from 2006.

enjoy.

BSWC One-a-Day: Crevecoeur - Slow Waltz with Elvis

The latest John Peel Tribute compilation was released last week. This one is number 8.

The John Peel Tributes honor the late, great British disc jockey and have some wonderful CC music. Visit the collection page at archive.org and take some time to listen through the JPT releases.

Crevecoeur has a quiet, if a little sad instrumental on session 8. Perhaps this explains the provenance of the band's name, which derives from the phrase, "Broken Heart".

Interesting too, is the fact that there is some association between Elvis impersonators and the City of Creve Coeur, Missouri...hmmm.

BSWC One-a-Day: Sushi Brother - Shadowfighter

Today's selection is a single release from Monotonik called Shadowfighter [mtw020].

Sushi Brother is from Staten Island or Sweden:
"This piece of trickjazztical funknology comes at you outta Staten Island.. uhh.. Sweden, and monkeys around with your peridontal atrium in a wondrous, Squarepusher meets Ninja Tune style."
I played on BSWC-the Show a few months ago, but here it is as a One-a-Day.

BSWC One-a-Day: The Paloseco Brazz Orchestra - Madrugada a la Gil Evans

The Paloseco Brazz Orchestra presents a big brass sound from Puerto Rico via ccMixter. This one was a Editor's Pick from the CC remix site and it is horn perfection. Just simply amazing.

Fourstones sez:
Sensual nuevo jazz samba shows an arranging virtuosity in this remix masterpiece. Chill with this special piece of beauty.

BSWC One-a-Day: 3Sacchetti - Bobo-yeah. matteo e un eco-mostro

Released just a few days ago on WM Recordings, Bora! Bora! Mr. Motto by 3Sacchetti got me excited right away! 3Sacchetti is three musicians who had a desire to create something new. The began playing together in 2004.

"the members began with a standard jazz order, then they made an effort to change... it resulted in a strange balcanic music with wild and bizarre melodies."

Don't get too comfortable with any one theme, rhythm, or genre... every track on this release will surprise you with how well it bounds from one idea to the next.

Excellent release, fresh and fun.

BSWC One-a-Day: M_ir - Jausenpause

Via the Viennese netlabel, Zufall Aufnahmen comes the latest release from Russian artist, M_ir. m_ir is Mir Mayakow and he last appeared in these pages when Subsystem posted a tune on July 24.

The name of the release is Bunkersongs [zufall020].

We learn the following from the release notes:
"...now this is Mir's second Album proper. Eight songs - this time more focused on the voice (Mir as a child was member of the village choir for a lon time) - knit together from material from the last 5 years."
This is another release you will want in your collection. It makes me happy. For me it was a toss up as to whether to post Rocketrobotnik or Jausenpause. I ended up with Jausenpause after swaying to the lovely female vocals.

Today's post comes via netlabels.info, another source for Creative Commons joy.

The release is called In Love We Trust...and We Hate [dbr004].

BSWC One-a-Day: Transistor Karma - April TK

The mixters at ccMixter.org are having a blast with Calendar Girl's project. Calendar Girl has been collecting remixes of her monthly releases for a compilation that is coming soon.

On August 31st, Transistor Karma uploaded a particularly nice mix. Check it out.

I don't know much about Transistor Karma. The artist has three remixes at ccmixter. According to the site profile, the artist likes "". I'm totally there.

BSWC One-a-Day: D fast - Froggie's trip to the edge of the world

This tune is included in a wonderful compilation from the Ronin Collective, Gama [rc025]. The metadata for the release is a tad confusing, but according to the folks at Netlabelism, D fast is the artist.

The compilation has tremendous variety. The version of "The Joker" is excellent, though I'm not sure how it can appear on a Creative Commons licensed release.

Licensing aside, there is a ton of great stuff for your enjoyment.

BSWC One-a-Day: Andromeda Island - Westerianer

Very smooth. Light a few candles and settle down with this release from the netlabel, Sofasound.

Andromeda Island has a few releases on Sofasound. They are all worth the download. Great production values on each. Chill, trip-hop is the ticket.

Enjoy today's selection.
